What To Do After The Wedding With Your Dress

darlin.jpg

There are a lot of creative ideas brides have come up with in the past on what to do with their gown after their big day. We have all heard of ‘Trash the Dress’ or there is always the option to resell it. But even if you plan to resell your gown you will need to get it cleaned.

At this point, since you are reading this article, you most likely already have your gown. You spent weeks, maybe months finding the perfect gown or having one custom-made for you by myself, and now you are thinking, wait, what am I doing with this after our wedding day?

Unless you are getting eloped in the courthouse, (not in the summer in the South, ha!) and only wearing your dress for an hour or two, you will need to get your dress professionally cleaned absolutely. Most likely, you are wearing your gown for 5-8 hours. It is well fitted to your body, you will be dancing, drinking, and walking around outside, and it will inevitably get dirty.

With the delicateness of wedding gowns, beading, fine fabrics, and lace, you cannot just turn it inside out and throw it in the wash. When you send to get your gown professionally cleaned, they take an individual approach to your gown and decide on how to get it back to looking new. They will re-bead, re-sew, remove wine stains, dirt stains, sweat, and everything, and at the end, they will steam it and pack it in a window-pane box so you can see it but it cannot mold or yellow.

Wearing Your Gown Again, soon?

The Wedding Dress Preservation Kit Company cleans dresses everyday, all day. They know what they are doing. You cannot simply send to the local dry cleaners.

The Most Popular Option

Drop off your gown with me here in Lakeland and I’ll take care of the rest.

This option comes back in a cardboard box with a window so you can see your gown and still show it off. You would most likely keep this in a closet or under the bed.

Framing Your Gown After The Wedding

If you do not want to put your dress under the bed safely or in the closet, another option I am really excited to share with my brides is framing your wedding dress! (After getting your gown professionally cleaned)

It would give me so much joy to know my brides are displaying their gown in their home to see every day. I happily did some research for a current bride of mine and found lots of options that were $1000 and up for beautiful displays, but knowing my client’s budget, I kept looking. And it has to be mentioned, DIY is not the way to go on this one folks. The professionals can guarantee it will not get damaged by air pollutants or UV lighting and have years of experience packing gowns. After looking into DIY myself, I found that the professionals are stuffing the dress to make it look like it on someone, not as easy as it looks, using clear pins, and even sometimes hand-sewing the gown to the backing if necessary for the perfect look.

I found Custom Framing Designs in California who will work with you to frame your gown. They even have options for LED lights for an exceptional look.

Use Coupon Code desiree50 to save $50 off your 1st order at custom framing designs.

Another Framing Company option is the Outrageous Framing.

https://www.framemyweddingdress.com/ They are located in Florida and have larger, more luxe options to show your full dress.

Price is upon request, but something like the below display is around $3,200.

Altering your Gown into Something New

Another favorite option of mine is the option to get your wedding gown altered into something new. There are hundreds of ideas out there including a cocktail dress (see below) or lace top, a fun tutu skirt, pillows, a christening gown or first communion dress for a lil’ one…

With this option, from experience as a dressmaker/seamstress, it is not necessary to get it cleaned before having it altered, but the seamstress, I’m sure, would appreciate working with a clean dress. And you cannot assume the seamstress will clean any stains or possible discoloring for you.

Wedding Dress Party?

Ok, another trend I can get behind is the Wedding Dress Party trend. It’s one more day of fun, pictures, and feeling absolutely beautiful in your gown—why not? Invite the girlfriends over, tell them to wear their dresses, and binge-watch Friends!

Whatever You Want

Really, the best option for what to do with your wedding dress after your wedding, is whatever you want. This dress is all about you and if you want to jump in the mud and splash around it, then you should.

I created this super cute wedding invitation on my own within 10 mins, and most of all that time was spent looking through the hundreds of different template options they have, including uploading your own design.

Pictured above: SWEET HONEYCOMB WEDDING INVITATIONS with the bracket shape and white envelope, but there are over 40 colors of envelopes to choose from!

Not only does Basic Invite have over 900 Wedding Invitations Suites but they have the finest cardstock options. The above invitation is available in Signature Matte (matte finish, 110 lb., white), Smooth Coated (semi-gloss finish, 110 lb., white), Premium Shimmer (shimmer finish, 110lb., pearl white), Double Thick (matte finish, 200lb., white), Luxe Velvet (velvet matte finish, 110lb., white).

What is a Wedding Invitation Suite? A wedding invitation suite consists of all paper goods sent along with the wedding invitation. It should always include a response card, as well as important information like directions and accommodations. (brides.com)

Just look at all of the ‘related items’ that go along with the template I chose above. Sweet Honeycomb Wedding Suite.

Wide Selection of Thank You Cards at basicinvite.com

I loved all of the unique thank you cards and created two options to go with my invitation. Which one do you like better? The first one is the one meant to go with the invitation design, but since my unique photo had a watercolor sunset, I made a thank you card to resemble with the Stepped Ombre Bridal Shower Thank you Card pictured above.

Styling your Southwest Bridal Dress + Texas Wedding Day Inspiration

When I started designing this collection, I approached it in a different way. I thought about all the details of my hypothetical bride’s wedding day. When and where it would be; the spring or summer in the Southwest.

I then started thinking about what I have seen brides love—showing their personality on their wedding day. I also thought about comfort and if my bride would want to be able to get on a horse or not. If she was able to run through a field or not if she would be easily able to be thrown over her new husband/wife’s shoulder for those fun, romantic, whimsical photos we all love.

For this post, I compiled some inspirational photos and styling tips for your Southwest wedding. Let me know what you think in the comment section below.

Venue Inspiration-The Union on Eighth, Georgetown

Ok, so when we planned our wedding, finding and booking the venue was the first step. (Besides calling your parents and/or besties!)

I was searching for the perfect venue and stopped looking once I saw the Union on Eighth. It has a historical charm mixed with modern details—just like my dresses!

I used embroidery throughout the collection, so this custom cake from Sweet Treets with its embroidery inspired design would match seamlessly.

I was inspired by the handmade details that Southwest fashion is known for. I especially took inspiration from Mexican embroidery and have Mexican-inspired embroidery on the Wrangler gown, She-Wolf jumpsuit, and the Wildflower gown.

Sky Stone at the Great Outdoors

I finished this dress along with a couple of other dresses a few months ago, pre-COVID, and kept waiting for this all to end, but after June hit, I could not wait any longer. So I collaborated with a small vendor team and we made sure to keep a distance when possible (hard with a model) and we all wore facemasks as well, including our model.

5R5A7978.jpeg

Since Callie and the photographer could stay 6 ft apart because of her long lens, we were able to get some shots in between with no mask.

5R5A7875.jpeg

The Sky Stone gown is named after the turquoise Sky Stone. Sky Stone dates back far as the mummy period, but it has a great meaning to the Native American culture, and that is where I borrowed the name from for my gown with turquoise details. They used to say it is the “stone that stole its color from the sky, …and it brings prosperity, good luck, and power” -(Kallstrom)

Designed to be comfortable, effortless, and carefree, like the badass women of the Southwest. Other dresses/jumpsuits in the collection include Mexican inspired embroidery. Link at the bottom of this blog post.

Day 54 Quarantine Life

54 days to me seems like one long week of facemasks and hulu. As of today, I have made 284 masks, with of those 60 being donated.

20 of which are being donated tomorrow to the Austin Disaster Relief Network.

Screenshot_20200510-172452_2.png
IMG_20200509_205725.jpg
IMG_20200510_172331.jpg

As I send these off tomorrow, I feel as though I can go back to couture sewing with open orders because I have no more face mask orders currently. Stores like Old Navy and Target have started to sell them, so people are not desperately fleeing to Etsy (US small business shops) anymore.

The Melisandre Maternity gown & Bluebonnets

Wow! Jocelyn is on fire in the Melisandre maternity gown! It looks like it was made for her! I actually made this gown with the intention of it fitting many women with its stretchy jersey material, open neck, and size 6/8 maternity size. Because photographer, Gypc Girl, is offering maternity sessions and if you book with her, you have the option of wearing one of my maternity gowns, including this one, and one other only currently, for only an additional $50.

More about Face Masks, Quarantine continues

Well, I thought the face masks were only going to be needed for our health heroes on the frontlines, but after an announcement from the CDA that we are all now recommended to wear them when headed out because it now can travel through air particles, I have made them available for friends/family first, and then recently have listed on my other Etsy here.

More pics from Treasure Coast Medical Center in Florida. They love their new batch of face masks! Adding a little cuteness to this pandemic.

Handmade Face Masks for health heroes

IMG_20200326_124402.jpg

I want to start off by saying I hope you and yours are healthy and are staying safe. I admit, this is scary. I can only imagine how the health heroes feel going into work dealing first hand with the sick.

After seeing so many of my idols and influencers start making masks for the people on the front lines of coronavirus, I knew I had to step up.

I was a day behind everyone apparently, because all of the 1/8”-1/4” elastic was sold out. I was happy to see so many sewers come forth to help.

So I looked up a pattern and found one that didn’t require elastic. Latex free, tie-back. Far left in photo.

I contacted my best friend, Michael, who is a PA in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida to see if his facility needed any. (I know he is in a smaller town, and thought there would be less donators, I was right) He was, to my surprise, in need of them. They are running low on masks, like so many other health care facilities, and have resulted to homemade masks, if they can get them. He also mentioned how the elastic ones are much faster to put on—faster to make too, so I went back to my 1/2” elastic and starting rotary blading it in half. It worked, it may fray just a tad, but these are not meant to be worn for several days so I think it will last for the use intended.

Making them, finding fabric, pattern, cutting, sewing, ironing, took a lot longer than I thought it would. I worked from 8a-8p with just a few little food breaks and only came out with 28 handmade face masks.

I ran out of fabric, needs to be 100% cotton, and as a bridal designer, I do not have much cotton lying around. I know Joanns/Michaels are open, but I have been following orders and have been quarantined for 10 days now, and I have heard the fabric stores are packed and the employees do not want to be there during this uncertain time, so I used only what I had already available.

Joanns is supposed to be handing out free packets to seamstresses so they can continue making masks, but they keep running out of packs/supplies at my local Joanns, so I’m unable to get any.

I hope I helped and they get used!

Maybe I’ll get back some photos of the heroes using them! ;)

New Dress, Darlin' at McKinney Falls with Sunflower Stills

Oh Darlin’! This dress is inspired by the Southwest and 70’s boho fashion. I created a faux poncho on the top half of the dress, playing with sheerness, and the bottom half of the dress is very untraditional with it’s ankle asymmetrical hem, and easy-to-wear style.

I, of course, work with brides to create the dress of their dreams, but when I am designing for my brand, I am always thinking about the dress being easy to wear, comfortable, fashionable, and a little bridal-y.

Thunderbird and Love Warrior in Joshua Tree California

When you’re wearing one of my Southwest bridal gowns, I want you to feel like a badass! Like you can kick butt(if needed) or kick back next to a bonfire.

Marina from MarinaWanders Photography was able to capture that feeling in Joshua Tree California on a short vacation she took over there with model Brie Bronnenberg.

Marina, along with coming up with the direction of the shoot, and photographing, also did all of the styling, makeup, and even some modeling herself! Insane!

The Wrangler gown went to Terlingua, Texas

So happy Amy from Al Gawlik Photography agreed to bring along my Wrangler gown to Terlingua, Texas. She was photographing bride/model Sasha for her wedding and the bride agreed to model my gown as well. I am very thankful because, when I moved to Austin from Florida, I thought everywhere was going to be more deserts! I am in the city, so sadly, we do not have too many desert areas I know of, but I love the desert! I love the cacti, the animals, the open space, and the overall feeling of history that makes me feel tough. That’s what I wanted my collection to be about. Southwest-inspired clothing makes you feel tough, ready for horseback, or to capture your own meal.

So meet Wrangler, made with geometric lace, pom-poms, and Mexican inspired embroidery.

Audrey Dress with the new “Gypc Girl Wagen”

Fifties styles not values

I love to put some vintage inspiration into all of my designs, and the Audrey dress is no exception. Inspired by Audrey Hepburn, this strapless gown is unique with its textured chiffon fabric, bow like bodice design, and removable lace topper.

I always love to work with Aubré from Gypc Girl Photography, and was extra excited to have worked with her with her newest “Gypc Girl Wagen”!
